3-day in Muscat

My wife and I will spend three day/2 nights in Muscat. We've made reservation to stay in Al Bustan. We were told to visit the famous mosque and the souk. Do we need a car to do that or we can simply hire a cab?

In addition, what else can we do in Muscat during such a short time. I'd appreciate any comment. Thanks.
