I want to know if it is better to use my debit card in Lagos upon arrival or to buy American cash to take to Nigeria until I can actually get some Nigerian money there.

Although there are ATMs available, I had heard too many warnings to feel comfortable using one.
You can exchange cash at the airport and at major hotels (if you are a guest).
Major hotels also accept credit cards. I used mine with no problems.
