I am going to be going to South Africa/Capetown next month but will have a 24 hour layover in Dakar coming and going there. I am in the process of getting some guidebooks read about Senegal but wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions as to what to do while there.
I had a friend who did the same trip get beat up in the face during the day there a few months ago while with a male guide, female and male friend so am nervous about leaving the hotel now. Some people have suggested going to the local orphanage to take small presents and help for the day-others have said that I should try and do some of the African markets.
Any thoughts, suggestions or insight? I really don't want to sit out by the pool all day till we leave. Thanks!
Dakar for two days?

Our best trip ever - in Morocco

If I was lucky enough to have a free day in Dakar, I would visit Goree Is., the nearby former slave departure point. I have lots of friends that have visited Dakar, but I have not yet been (only to the airport), and they have had no safety issues. My guess is that someone gets punched in the face everyday in NY, and I go outside everyday.
