I will be in Cape Town for about two weeks in late March 2013. Will spend one week with my son and his wife who be there to attend a wedding. Will have another week to spend alone - I am traveling solo - 60ish, love beautiful scenery, great food and wine, wildlife, local arts and handicrafts and soft adventure. I normally would just rent a car and strike out on my own but think I might feel more comfortable on a tour. I was there a couple of years ago with a friend - we visited Cape Town sites, took a train to Joburg and then rented a car and drove to Krueger. Loved that but would like to see something else this time. I have just started looking but am a little overwhelmed. Would appreciate any recommendations on a tour based out of Cape Town that would take me to places I have not yet been. I am travelliing on a moderate budget - does not need to be luxurious but prefer to stay a step or two above hostel accomodations. Thank you so much

Looks like a great trip with family followed by some solo exploration. For your interests Cape Town is a great place to be.

I was thinking of doing something similar on our trip next August but decided we didn't have the time. Check out Sousslevi, Namibia. I would have stayed at the Sousslevi Dune Lodge in the park. Driving is a possibility, I think.

Yes atravelynn - living in Marietta. I enjoyed reading your reports very much. When I was in Cape Town in early 2011 was able to do a lot of sightseeing in the area. This time I would like to venture further out - but preferably with a little help. Embarrassed to say but I do not drive a stick shift which is what most rental cars are in South Africa and also do not feel completely comfortable traveling alone in a car. So am looking for a guided tour (small group) for 4 - 6 day outing from Cape Town. Didn't you love those penguins - you have some great pics!
Springbok Atlas is a good option. For trips as far as Namibia I would go with a company that operates in that area PLUS one that has the necessary transport back-up should one experience problems....
