A few years ago my husband and I went to south africa. I was able to find the camps in kruger where local visitors stay. We stayed in the huts which were great and well within our budget. I am wondering if there are any such camps in tanzania or kenya where we are heading in January please? cheers

Meaning South Africans or specific tribal groups?
Local Kenyans and Tanzanians, all ethnicities, do travel but no specific area I can think of, whether type of accommodation (lodges/camps) and even budget. Depends on number of days they have, distance they wish to travel, and how (drive/fly). Bear in mind also that locals pay 'resident' vs 'non-resident' rates that foreign visitors incur.
I think the OP is referring to rest camps run by SANParks. This is not as common in East Africa.

There are also some lovely farm/ranch stay type places not in national parks but with access to nearby parks or on their own conservancies that are reasonably priced in the Rift Valley/Mt Kenya/Laikipia regions.
I'm less familiar with Tanzania but a quick scan of the TANAPA site seems to indicate they mainly operate campsites.

Many such properties around the Rift Valley lakes as well which is a popular weekend destination for Nairobi residents.
