Hello
A recruiter contacted me about a job in Qatar. I'm wondering what life will be like in Qatar for a US person. Specific things on my mind are: Whats the social life like?
Whats the cost of living? I'm told the employer keeps your passport - how easy is it to retrieve the passport for personal visits to other countries in the region? Any other general information about living in Qatar would be highly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance. Cheers!!

Sorry, darlin', I haven't been on Fodor's in a while ... I live in Doha and I love it! That said, it's not everyone's cup of tea. It's HOT six months of the year, it's one big construction site, the traffic isn't very nice, and Qatar is anything but scenic. It also is incredibly expensive for accomodations. BUT, if your company gives you housing and a good salary and is an international/American firm you'll be fine! I love the energy and the new, fresh feel of a country and its people becoming empowered (especially the women) and knowlegable. I like the incredible mix of expats and locals. I LOVE the look on Qatari faces when I (blonde) speak Arabic to them. The cost of living is high, food about the same as the US, clothing also. Gas - about 75 cents a gallon. Inflation about 17%. If you are single and like nightlife you may not be thrilled by Doha. If you have kids, some of the world's best schools are here. Just have your contract include tuition, that's normal. If you are working for an American firm they will not keep your passport. Ask the HR people. Oh, and did I say, I have a full-time live-in maid. My social life is at the gym, the church, Education City, (six US universities) and traveling around the area - i.e. Thailand, Jordan, Bali - all the places that are just too far from the US for a weekend trip.Wish you had a way to PM me!

Mandilulur, is PM the same as IM?
No, it's a "private message." But feel free to e-mail me at mandilulur@hotmail.com. I just set up this account because my other one has my real name!
