A friend of mine says his guidebook (published by another company) lists viagra as an item that tourists cannot bring into the country. Before it was legalized I used to have people ask me to get it for them, which I never did. It never would have crossed my mind that a prescribed drug couldn't be brought into any country. Anybody know if this is correct?
Is viagra legal in egypt?

Our best trip ever - in Morocco

That's very strange, I saw it for sale in pharmacies in Egypt. That was in 2007, I don't know if anything has changed since then.
It's available at most all Pharmacies now....as is much else. Most things you don't need a prescription for either.
Thanks, I'll let him know it's safe to take it with him. Must have been an old book.
It was available at the pharmacies back in 2002 and maybe earlier.
I had heard that rumour as well. So rather than risk having it all conficated, I swallowed about 20 pills as our plane landed.
Talk about a great pyramid.
If that was my partner I'd tell him to leave the viagra at home. In egypt it will be too hot for hanky panky and I am sure I will be too tired after a day of sightseeing to want to partake in hours of viagra induced shennanigans!
Who said shennanigans would be with your tired partner?
regards - tom
Tom... no matter who was "dishing out the goods"... I think I'd be too tired after a hot day in Egypt!
What I want to know is why waste the expensive stuff you bought in the states - surely Health Insurance isn't paying for it there, is it? Buy it at probably a fraction of the price here and don't worry about bringing it with you.
Contrary to apparent assumptions, when I said I was asking for a friend, I meant I was asking for a friend.
I have been told by people here who use it that if you buy in quantity you can get it pretty cheap - a dollar or two a pill from Canada. I've never tried it, but I do appreciate the responses and I'm certain he does too. I guess he wants to be able to rise to the occasion should circumstances demand it. Personally, I don't recommend that but he didn't ask my opinion on that subject.
I did ask, he said the guidebook he is using was published this year by F******s. Now my curiosity is aroused and I need to stop by barnes and noble to see this for myself.
Can't people just control themselves for the 1-2 weeks that they're away on vacation and leave the viagra at home? LOL
Cheap Viagra might explain why Egyptian men were always so "glad to see me." I haven't received so much attention in years.

I really must go back.
Here is the page from that guidebook, I'll copy and paste the excerpt. This is found in the section entitled "Customs -- What You Can Bring into Egypt."
Prohibited items include birds (live, stuffed, or frozen), Viagra, antiques, narcotics, cotton, and "items offensive to Islam."
http://www.frommers.com/destinations/egypt/0398020157.html
Regarding Viagra, I believe Mr. Frommer got it wrong this time.
Casual Cairo, why would cotton be prohibited? Or did Frommer miss the mark on that one too?
I would imagine they're talking about the cotton used to stuff the birds.
Does anyone know if the penalties as *stiff* as they are for Viagra?
Hmmm, I don't know how stiff the penalties are, but we should all be glad for the *heads up* about Viagra.
I've heard they're especially tough on *hardened* criminals.
Are prescription vicodin or morphine considered nacotics?? My husband has both for break through pain. they are in their bottles. I don't want to bring if they will be taken away-Thanks Chris
No need to even worry about viagra with a husband who needs back & knee surgery & a post menapausal wife.haha
He will not have his vicodin or morphine taken away if they are in prescription bottles, and he doesn't go through customs waving flags that he has them. Just keep them in your purse or where ever you like and walk through. Tourists here for one time only rarely get their bags checked. Customs has their hands full checking the Egyptians bags and those of us foreigners that live here that they know are bringing in stuff from abroad that maybe we should buy here instead. LOL
<<Customs has their hands full checking the Egyptians bags and those of us foreigners that live here that they know are bringing in stuff from abroad that maybe we should buy here instead. LOL>>

REALLY?????? People do that?????
I know you never did, did you? The fact that you had 4 persons with 2 bags each on every trip home, I'm sure you never brought back a thing other than the essentials. LOL

I remember the first time I came back from Italy. They asked me if I had anything to declare. Of course the answer is NO. The customs guy lifted my bag up and it was sooooo heavy. I had something like 13 bottles of wine/booze in there. He made me open it. I showed him it was all wine and he let me go, thank heavens. I wrap the real contraband electronic stuff in my underwear and they hardly ever find that. LOL
Got a tip from an expat living in Luxor, she told me that she layers the top of her bag with vacuum packed Bacon! TRUE! and apparently as soon as customs opens her bags they ask her what it is, she tells them and then they are so gobsmacked and outraged they shut the bags and go and wash their hands! LOL
Anyone tried that?
And can I just say that I havent stopped laughing since i read this thread thank you to all of the above for making my night!
Scotsgirl.
scotsgirl - I had a friend who brought in a PlayStation (for her DH!). She bought a huge package of Kotex (can I say that on here???
), emptied it, put in the PlayStation, and then repacked the Kotex around it. No way any customs agent was touching that package!
When we moved there - with out 6 suitcases, 10 huge boxes, and an ice chest - the box that the customs agent happened to choose to open was the one with all the boys' videos. But I had put all my lingerie on top. The customs agent opened the box, reached in, pulled out some of my undies, then quickly threw them back in, closed the box, and sent us on our way!!!
You can buy it out there openly from anywhere. Be careful at the airport though, they may take it off you citing that you cannot take it out of the country....
LOL I'm pretty sure Egypt would be very happy if they could provide Viagra for the whole world. The USA would be unhappy to see you buying it from any pharmaceutical companies other than their own though.
But you may be right - this is the logic free zone and you never know if a customs guy found out you were taking a lot of Viagra out of Egypt, he might just panic that his share was leaving the country. LOL
sanj - this string is over 2 years old.... I doubt anyone is much interested any more.
Of course it is legal in Egypt, how do you think the population got to be what it is.
