We're tentatively planning a trip to Morocco and Tunisia for ten or eleven days this December. I'm thinking of flying into either country, renting a car and driving through Algeria to the other country, and then flying back to the US. Can we take a rental car through Algeria? Would we have to hire a guide and car? I checked flights, but it sems it's a seven hour flight via Rome. If that's the case, I'd rather drive than sit on a plane. I apologize for being rather vague; this is still in the initial stage. Your help is appreciated.

Have they opened the overland border between Morocco and Algeria? I thought they closed it more than 10 years ago. My guess is that you need to fly via Europe.
Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop between Casablanca and Tunis, daily.
Before you give any further consideration to renting a car, you need to call the rental agencies and find out if taking that car across borders is allowed. In many parts of the world it is not.
I am not answering your question but with 10 days if this is your first trip to Morocco there is more than enough to keep you busy and alot of various type of places ie. desert,ancient cities and beautiful coastal towns. It would simplify the trip...probably save airfare and be more relaxed. I have also been to Tunisia and it is very similar to Morocco and we enjoyed both countries but just wondering if you considered a more in depth look at one or the other?

I agree with turaj - 10 days is barely enough time for Morocco. And last time I checked the Algerian border was indeed still closed. I would recommend reading the travel advisories on Algeria before planning a visit there, eg. tinyurl.com/lt98zx
