July/August is a good time to visit Namibia. It's the busy season in Namibia, though you wouldn't know it when you travel around.

We went last summer, late July to mid August, with our family of seven to Namibia and South Africa. It was a perfect time of year to visit those countries. Had a great trip planned by Tristan Cowley of Ultimate Safaris Namibia. Would work with him again in a heartbeat, with respect to planning and places to visit. Our guide/driver was Perez - also fabulous and incredibly knowledgeable. We landed in Windhoek and began our touring in Ongava and Etosha and then traveled by vehicle down through Namibia, ending in Cape Town.

Namibia is VERY easy to self-drive. I would rent a good truck from a reliable company and do it yourself if that is your bag. NAmibia has a great online reservations system and the roads are excellent. Here is a link to our travelogue that you may find useful - the links are there and hopefully still work.

Hi and than tks for the replies. I am looking at self driving for about 2 weeks. Presently researching possible itineraries.

We are just back from a self-driving tour through Namibia. As others have said, Namibia has an excellent infrastructure and self-driving is very easy. With a 4x4 you are on the safe side.

There is no need for a guide. Each lodge offers guided game drives.

The usual Namibia itinerary covers a lot of destinations so that you change accomodations daily.

We did it differently. We stayed three to four nights at each place which allowed a more relaxing pace and gave us more opportunities for animal sights.

Between June and August when it is cool and dries out more.
