I will be arriving in Cape Town on a Tuesday evening mid March after long flight from US. I will be traveling alone the first three days. I would appreciate any recommendations for a hotel within walking distance to V and A waterfront and suggestions of what to do on Wednesday and Thursday - any recommended one day tours. This is my second trip to Cape Town - when here last time went to Table Mountain, Robben Island. I will be joined by my son and his wife on Friday and we will go to Stellenbosch and to areas south of Cape Town after they arrive.
I do not want to spend a fortune on hotel room but of course am looking for something secure and near some restaurants etc. I am very interested in local arts and history.

I can recommend Blackheath Lodge (not a hotel, I know) however it is a reasonably priced B&B, close to restaurants and you can walk or bus to the V&A. The breakfasts are memorable as are the staff and owners who do all they can to make your stay enjoyable.
Cape Point is a good day trip from Cape Town, we hired Mariana Delport of Cape Eco-tours, however the Hilton Ross day tour is very good and allows time at the major attractions.

I checked Blackheath and unfortunately it is already booked. Any other suggestions? I like staying in guest houses and small hotels - just unsure as to what area(s) I should be looking in. Pam

Try the "Breakwater Lodge", 2 doors from the more expensive Commodore and The Portswood. It is within walking distance to V&A.
Take the city tour or use "Hop on, Hop off" bus, which you can pick up at V&A Waterfront. Or spend a day at the beautiful Botanical Gardens and have an afternoon tea there. OR if you want to be a bit extravagant, have the afternon tea at Mount Nelson Hotel - it is worth the experience - an iconic hotel anyway!!!For local arts and history, try a few museums along the Company Gardens, gosh..there is so much to do there and I wish I could tell you more......How about a visit to The Slave Museum, located just below Company Gardens......
