We're planning a trip to Madagascar in September 2010. I'd like to end the trip with some snorkeling, but only if the quality of the reefs, fish, water, is high enough to justify this.
Does anyone have any recent experience snorkeling in Madagascar. Particularly at the resorts of Nosy Iranja or Tsarabanjina? If yes, how healthy were the reefs? How easy to access?
I've read that snorkeling at Nosy Tanikely near Nosy Be is overcrowded with lots of reef damage. Is this true?
Thanks for your help!

I did some snorkeling in Madagascar off the coast of Tulear (in the southwest). This was in 1996, so I cannot comment on the current state of the reefs. It was difficult getting to the reefs - the tide went out quickly and we ended up doing quite a bit of wading - but the quality was fantastic. We saw amazing fish, stunning nudibranchs, and blue iridescent urchins.
I've spent a total of 6 months traveling/living in Madagascar if you have other questions.
Hello Travel Monkey
I'm planning on going to Madagascar in October. What do you suggestion of a charming family run hotel in the capital city?
We love to see the animals and love hiking, but finish off at a luxury resort at Nosy-Be at the end! A small luxury resort like hotel Tsara Komba Lodge! I think it may be out of price range, but any suggestions appreciated.
Hi TPaxe,
Note that I (unfortunately)haven't been to Madagascar for over a decade...
I don't think I've stayed anywhere luxurious in Madagascar! I did stay at the Colbert Hotel in Tana, which was nice but a larger hotel. We stayed at a charming little family run hotel called the Karthala - http://www.toutmada.com/Le-karthala.html. Their slogan was "Un peu comme chez vouz."
As far as animals, I'd recommend going to see the Indri at Perinet/Andasibe. Ranamafana is worth a visit as well, and is relatively accessible. Fort Dauphin is a lovely town, with a stunning lagoon, and from there you can visit Berenty Reserve.
I'm afraid I haven't been to Nosy Be, so I have no recommendations there.
