Staying in East Jerusalem

I will go visit Israel with my family during the christmas holidays. How safe is it to stay in East Jerusalem? I have made reservations at Azzahra Hotel. It's located at 13 Azzahra st. in Jerusalem. Walking distance to I believe Herod's gate.
My husband and I stayed there 10 years ago & we enjoyed it very much. However, times have changed and I don't know if it's still ok. How far is this hotel to West Jerusalem?
