Let's not forget about the real Syria, a country that really has little to do with President Asad and his "clan-regime".

I will never forget Syria as it is one of my favorite countries and Damascus one of the most interesting cities on the planet but the people are what make it really extraordinary. Great article.
What a tragedy about Syria these days. In '05 we spent 2 delightful weeks there, exploring not just the cities but way out in the eastern desert and around the Dead Cities. Aleppo was our favorite city, but Damascus was nice, too. Only used Hama as a base to make day trips, but it worked well. Never got to Homs or the coast. I just hope it's all resolved soon and the exceptionally nice people of that nation can get back to normal living, probably with a new and hopefully still non-sectarian government.
Thanks brings back fond memories...
My prayers go to the still suffering have not forgotten
to donate to worthy causes doing great work there.

We were there in 2010 and I have so many beautiful memories of our trip to Syra. I posted my trip report...
Thank you Arabist88 for bringing back all those wonderful memories.
When I look at my pictures of Syria, my heart brakes! The cities were so beautiful and the countryside overflew with its rich history. I think of the sweet, curious ,helpful people we meet on our journy; our wonderful guide and driver... I just wonder... I wish and pray that they are fine. Homs and its people, what a tragedy!!...I pray ,too, for this horrible time to be over soon...
