Two words. Business class.

In addition to Business Class, you could look at booking a second Economy Class ticket. It would be cheaper than a Business Class seat. Just don't book via a website - you'll need to call one of KLM's agents to make the booking, so that it's recorded in their computers that the second seat was purchased for size reasons).

I'm a size 12 and I'm 6' tall. Not exactly model material, but I'm not classified as "obese". Perhaps I measured wrong.

I certainly don't need a second seat or seat belt extender.

Which airline? If it's United, go for Economy Plus.

There are very few airlines that offer any kind of economy + with seats wider than regular economy.

Have you recently (last 2-3 years) flown on another aircraft?

Check its width. You might be surprised to see that you do fit, as the measurement is kinda weird if you ask me.

springfling, everyone else your size manages to fit in the seat, apparently without grave disruption to their insides, and you'll readily be able to do the same.

(As for Underhill's unfortunate response: United's E+ seats are precisely the same width as their regular economy seats.)

Ok, so if my friend who weighs 60lbs more and is a size 20 can fit without a problem, and doesn't need a seat belt extender, I'll be fine.

You really don't. Ya pays your money and ya takes your chances.

I'm not exactly svelte, and I can fit in economy just fine. I've never had a seat belt extender.

However, I do save my pennies and my points for an upgrade. After over a million miles with AA, I've sat in just about everything.

Get a window or aisle seat. You can shift a little to the left or right to give you a bit more room. Are you travelling alone or with a partner? If you're with a partner you can lift the middle arm ever so slightly, so that only you notice to give yourself room.

I am sure I have travelled with a butt the same size. You're not huge. You'll be fine I am sure.

Do they still make girdles?

Seriously, assuming you travel with your husband, get abutting seats and raise the arm between them to get a few more inches. My observation is that getting into the seat is not a problem; getting out is a challenge to many wide people.
