We have a long layover using AirBerlin the end of May. I was thinking of paying and getting into a lounge - does anyone know about the American Lounge there? Any others that you can recommend in that terminal?

There are two Admirals Club lounges in T8, one in the main building, the other on the satellite pier (reached by an underground passageway.) They're both quite comfortable, although they can get a bit crowded from time to time.
Details on the facilities and day pass prices are here: http://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInformation/airportAmenities/AdmiralsClub.jsp
Note if you're flying in business class on airberlin, you'll get complimentary admission to the ACs; just show your boarding pass(es).
Thank you so much Gardyloo!
