Hi all,
Please excuse my ignorance but we recently booked an airfare on Lufthansa and the travel confirmation says 'upgradeable fare'. What exactly does this mean? That we can use our points to upgrade? Does this not apply to all fares? Madly curious, it is rare when we book fares to see something that sounds so tantalising!

It means exactly what it says - you can upgrade that ticket to the next class of service assuming seats are available on that flight and you have the appropriate number of Frequent Flyer miles in your Lufthansa account.
You see, some fares (usually the very lowest ones) are not upgradable. You, obviously, purchased an "upgradable" fare ticket. Now, whether or not you can actually upgrade that ticket is governed by many factors such as seat availability, the number of FF miles in your account and/or your status level in the Lufthansa Award Program.
Go to the Lufthansa website or call the airline for more details.
Oh, OK, thank you so much RoamsAround - I did not realise not all fares were upgradeable. We often spend our points on other things and don't always cash them in as fares. We will probably not try to upgrade these even if the opportunity exists.

You can pretty much upgrade any fare, but it will end up costing you a lot of money, not just miles. My husband and I will fly from Chicago to Zurich in a couple of weeks. I got almost the cheapest fare on SWISS... not the very cheapest fare though because it doesn't earn us any FF miles. If I look at our reservation on line (booked thru United) we have the option of upgrading our cheap tickets, but the cost is about $1200+ per person to do so. We're not going to do that!
I have a ticket from Chicago to Bangkok in April (cheapest one I could find) that I have upgraded in one direction, using miles and cash. I am a very frequent flier on United and I have a difficult time getting upgrades to clear. Planes are more filled, there are fewer flight options as airlines cut back on routes, and there are lots of very frequent fliers like me who are hoping to get those few upgraded seats! It isn't the same experience as it was just a couple of years ago.
