Hi
Myself and a friend plan on traveling to China this May for the first time. We enjoy traveling and seeing different places and cultures but don't want to fit too much in and arrive back feeling exhausted and that we had seen nowhere properly. We had originally intended on using sleeper trains but think we will now fly so as to make the best use of our time (and get a good night's sleep!).
We want to get a good feel of China as a country - the countryside and cities and the Chinese culture. Day 1 - 13 are on a private tour and we will then spend the remainder in Hong Kong by ourselves. I know that there is no need to do a tour in China but given the amount that we want to fit it and our limited time, we want to take a tour.
Fodors has been very helpful in the past in informing my itinerary and I would appreciate any help you could give us on this.
(I have included the accommodation if anyone has any feedback on that - we want clean safe 3* - 4* hotels)

what was that you mentioned about not getting too tired... this is a non-stop trip...
i would cut things in 1/2
Xian rocks.
Beware of the tours. They say the jade factory is real, however, the factory may be real, the jade isn't.
I 2nd rhkkmk, this tour sounds exhausting ...
We stayed in Citadines Xian. See photos:

We liked it. The location was great for us. So what is a private tour? Just the two of you and a driver?
Not many people like packing a lot of things into a vacation but my husband and I can never see enough. See my itinerary for China in 2010. http://www.fodors.com/community/asia/on-the-road-in-china.cfm If you go to view the photos of Citadines, you can see more photos of our trip. It may help you decide what to do. If you can get to Pingyao or Datong, they are well worth the trip. For us, it was much more interesting than Hong Kong. A week there would have been too much for us.
We are in china now. We took sleeper trains and thought they were a great way of getting around and we were able to get good sleep along the way.
Looks pretty standard to me. It is not going to be leisurely, but no worse than most tours. Since this is YOUR tour, absolutely pre-negotiate how many shopping stops you'll get each day.
Are you not planning to visit Shanghai? It is a pretty lovely city!
Also - those factory tours are certainly optional - and weirdly tiring, in my opinion. You are constantly being pushed to buy the products.
There is no such thing as a leisurely tour of China. It's a lot of walking and traveling. The only way to tone it down would be to stay in one place for several days and pretend you have all the time in the world.
Thanks sdtravels - your post is very helpful! Good idea rrkwan on negotiating the number of shopping stops.
Did you fit in to see the pandas in Chengdu?
