What city in Japan are you leaving from?
Try this site for direct flights from either HND or KIX to HNL then HNL to LAX

Aloha!
Hi! Thanks very much for the reply. Appreciated. I don't have any preference (or plan for that matter!) about the departure airport. I would be scheduling my Japan visit to match up with how I get there and how I leave. Thanks again!
(p.s.!) .... just noticed that a round trip is cheaper than a one-way! Who works THAT out?!?!?
Round trips are typically cheaper than two one-way tickets. That's nothing new. Check kayak or itasoftware (both are dot coms) and you can get a fairly good idea of who flies your route. You will want to search a multi-city ticket.
Thanks for that ... incidentally, I was talking about just one way (!), and NOT two one-ways!
