Instead of going to Halong Bay next month, we would like to take a day to see either Mai Chau or Tam Coc. Any opinions?
Thanks.
Mai Chau vs. Tam Coc (Ninh Binh)?

I much preferred Mai Chau to Halong bay but can't comment on Tam Coc as I haven't been. Mai Chau is best visited as an overnight homestay to make the most of it as it is a 4 hour drive from Hanoi. The accommodation is basic but clean and reasonably comfortable and the food was excellent. We were lucky enough to be invited to a party laid on for some political science students from Hanoi Uni by the local communist party cadre. It was a fun night with lots of singing, dancing and drinking but I doubt it happens often.
Walking through the mist along the valley at dawn through the villages is one of my all time favourite travel moments. The people are so friendly and the home cooked food was excellent.
Thank you -- Mai Chau sounds wonderful, but we only have one day before flying home, so it might not work.
Any other suggestions would be most appreciated, though.
