Hello -
I am looking for a place for my family (5 people) to stay in Nozawa Onsen. We are looking for a traditional ryokan or an apartment close to the center of town and not far from the ski hill (as we will not have a car). Also hoping to find something resonably priced (aka not $500/night per person).
Is it worth it to book a ryokan with an onsen when there are so many public ones in the town?
Has anyone been skiing here at the end of March? Will it be slushy cement?
Any reccomendations or tips are greatly appreciated - Thanks!

Hi. check out www.nozawahospitality.com and look at Address Nozawa which should fit your needs (disclaimer: I'm the owner, so I'm biassed!). Kawamotoya would be our ryokan option, and Address Nagasaka a simpler apartment option close to the main gondola.
Good question about onsen. If you just want one or two dips to get the onsen experience, then the public ones are fine. The advantage of an onsen in your accommodation is that it's easier (you don't have to lug your change of clothes, shampoo, etc, around) and probably a bit more polished (the public ones are wonderful but the facilities for changing etc are very basic). Or if you just want to be able to have a bath, get an ensuite accommodation that will have hot water but not natural mineral water.
Don't worry about not having a car. It's a compact village so you can walk everywhere; conversely parking/manoeuvering a car is a right pain.
End of March skiing is usually great. Nozawa gets regular dumps so your chances of good fresh snow are neither higher nor lower at end March than at any other time, but the weather tends to be a bit nicer. If you're unlucky and there's not been snow for a while, just stick to the higher slopes. They keep the lifts running through end April and sometimes longer, so March isn't even close to the end of the season.
Even if you don't stay with us, I hope you have a wonderful time. Enjoy the great local food, sample the award-winning local sake, ski your heart out, and soak it all up!
Thank you for help! This is great info!
