Just extended our trip to SEA to 9 weeks Oct.19 to Dec. 27, flying into Singapore and out of Bangkok.
Our only givens are meeting family in Chiang Mai Nov. 15-21.
We are thinking of spending the first 2 weeks+ in Malaysia: 7 nights in Singapore, a day to train travel to Penang For 7 nights (hoping to explore some of the island).
Most likely flying to Thailand, maybe Phuket or Krabi before reaching Chiang Mai.
The rest of the trip will be Laos and Siem Reap with a few final days in Bangkok.
This is our retirement trip and we want to see as much as we can in the time we have but don't like to rush from place to place. We are also not sure we will get back to SEA (bucket list choices!). We find we do better staying in one area for at least a week. Is a week in Penang and a week in Singapore too much?
Thanks formany insight.

i nthink it might be a tad too much, esp. in penang, but then it gives you a nice chance to really explore the places at a leisurely pace---even to return to a place more than once if you really liked it..
I think I'd knock a night or two off of each Singapore and Penang and then spend two or three nights in either Kuala Lumpur or the Cameron Highlands.Take the train from Sing, then the bus after your stop to Penang. Malayasian roads and buses are really nice (and I normally hate bus rides!)
Thanks Icuy and rhkkmk - will ponder these suggestions. Maybe cut a few days and try to see Meleca, too. Borneo is on our bucket list so hoping to see other parts of Malaysia in the future.
Looks like a very good deal at the EO during our time in Singapore. Am wondering if we should reserve an inexpensive hotel at the airport on arrival as we don't arrive until 1:30am. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
melecca is only worth 2 days max
You are leaving out many of the more interesting places in Malaysia.
Pinang, aside from Georgetown for which 2-3 days max are enough, is a rather mediocre destination. For instance the beaches in Pinang are bad:

compared to what Malaysia has to offer:

An overnight stay in Melaka would make sense, since the city is pretty.
7 days in Singapore is a bit too much. Four or five days are more than enough.
Borneo is very interesting, but you do not write what you are interested in, so it's difficult to suggest an itinerary.
One last thing, November is the start of the rainy season in Malaysia.
