Old Shanghai Lanes Cuisine has been the suggested place...
may i suggest 6:30PM?
i will make us a res once we figure out how many people.
venue and time look fine
ht & mrs ht = 2
that now means 5 so far bob.....andy is channeling me
Aloha!
Two more - count us in! Time and venue fine.
its getting exciting
I wish I could be there!
Bob: you are becoming the King of GTGs -- Boston, Shanghai, Bangkok ...... Have great fun!!
i love meeting fodorites.. we also have done: london, dresden, honolulu, LA, NY
Bob - I'm counting on you to fill us in on where to go as it will be your last night and our first in shanghai. Shanghainese - wish you could make it.
i will june, as soon as i can better understand the place myself... i can't find them on the internet so maybe the smith's will help us out so i can contact them...
looks like we will be at least 9 but maybe as many as 12
Bob: I don't have english version but Coke Smith might. What I have is --
Old Shanghai Lane Cuisine, 300 East Nanjing Road, Floor 6
It's in a highrise building at the east end of the pedestrian street, 3 blocks from the Bund. Metro stop is East Nanjing Road, station is right under the building. From Yu Gardens it's one stop on Line 2, and from the french concession it's a few stops on Line 10. Or take a cab.
Phone# is 33767922, you can always have the hotel make the rez for you, ask for a window table. We ordered:
xiaolongbao (steamed soup dumplings), cold duck, crystal fresh-water shrimp, tofu with fresh-water crab meat, beef cubes, shanghai style rice with veggies ...
perfect directions..
you didn't order the mc-shanghai?
What is it?!
Aline, It's Bob's odd sense of humor.... mc = McDonald's
What do you mean by the term "pedestrian street"? I get the three blocks from the Bund part. Is it a street where no cars are allowed so taxi would only get us till a certain point, then we would walk a ways? Mahalo.
Aloha!
Thanks, HT, I need to meet him some day, you all have to come to San Francisco for a GTG.
The pedestrian shopping/eating area of East Nanjing Road filled with people is from People's Square to the 300 block, no traffic allowed, the taxi will drop you off at the entrance of the highrise building the restaurant is in, no walking needed.
The blocks from 300 east to the Bund is regular traffic, good to walk to the Bund to see the night lights after the meal.
Aloha!
bob is also lazy and would not want to have to ask HT to carry me...hw would probably refuse, but linda would for sure--she is the best!
as usual i thought i was being funny with the "Mc" remark.. even my grandchildren no longer laugh with me, only at me..
A--do you remember the name of the bldg that old shanghai is in....?
i found it, its in the henderson building
Bob what are you doing posting of Fodors? I thought you are going to be the keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention tonight!
it's cancelled for today so your plane is on the tarmac waiting for me.. hope you didn't need it.. Ann says hi.
Hey everyone! The 29th looks great for the Smith clan! Just found this thread - trying to get back in to the swing of things here in Shanghai.... Looking forward to it! So have we committed to the restaurant mentioned above? My wife suggested Lost Heaven, a good Yunnanese restaurant located on the Bund, but anything is good for us!
coke, i think we would like the restaurant above if you think it is appropriate??
could you make us a reservation for say 6:30 or 7 (if that works for you) for the 7 of us, plus yourselves. I would do it but there is no web site for them that i can find. let me know how it works out. it looks like it is easy to get to.
bob
Are we switching to Lost Heaven? That's on my list of places to go, so it would be fine by me and since it will be our first night in Shanghai, it would be nice to be on the Bund. The reviews are very good.
we are flexible, lets see what HT wants to do???
Lost Heaven on the Bund looks fantastic! Either one is fine with us.
http://www.lostheaven.com.cn/outlets-restaurant.aspx?type=restaurant-bund
Aloha!
Lost Heaven it is then...
i have made a res for us (9) at the lost heaven, bund for 6:30 under the name robert kimball..
see you there..
Lost Heaven is in my post of recommended restaurants, I thought you'd like shanghai food when you are there! Take a cab ...
Shanghainese - I've got your list and plan to try the shanghai food as well. Your recommendations are most appreciated.
coke---will you be bringing your son, in which case i will increase the number to 10??
Sorry, Coke, I should have sent you an email since you have been missing from this thread.
dgunbug -- I forgot where you are staying ...
Bob -- Online rez is for under 10, for 10 and more, write
contact@lostheaven.com.cn
And behave yourself with little Cokie, he is very worldly ...
I'm sure looking forward to meeting everyone. Perhaps we can get photo tips from coke and family - such great photographers!
No reservations in shanghai yet. Our only reservation so far is the novotel in Beijing.
This will be a blast! And please do include Cokie. I am starting to get back in to the swing of things now so I can check this thread more regularly and will keep up on the goings on. Very cool!
done
Aline,

Don't worry, xiaolongbao will be an everyday event for us when we can and the OSLC is one of our main targets for a dinner. We also will be checking the various Jia Jia's and Xiao Yang's we find along the way. I plan on dragging Bob and Karen into one without them knowing
I may have asked you before but do you know of any good Cantonese restaurants in Shanghai?
Aloha!
I like to see you drag Bob HT!
HT: Bi Feng Tang, casual place with big tasty menu, there are several branches so ask your hotel which one is closer to your hotel.
if its food, i never need dragging.. at least "normal" food..
i was not impresses with XBO's or whatever they are called when i had them on 55th st in nyc, but i hope the real thing will delight me...
we are very mnuch looking forward to the foods of shanghai..
HT, can we try the original place mentioned above for the GTG?
i suspect it will be difficult to remove peter from the club (read open bar) to go out to dinner some nights..
oh, the renaissance yu gardens has an open bar in the club???
if it's an open bar I never need dragging.......echo
yes we would love to try the original place mentioned above, in fact looking forward to it. send me a revised spreadsheet.....any night is fine when we are together in shanghai.....or did you mean for the actual gtg?
either way you guys know where you can find me when your ready to leave, haha
hanuman, looks like bob will dragging me
Aloha!
no just us, a tightly wound group
Don't forget the hairy crab and you guys will be there during the season too! Xio Long Bao is fine but hairy crabs are devine!
Love crab..hairy or not...looking forward to a good time.
Linda, we need to get these boy out of eating places, and into some retail therapy. There must be some in Shanghai. I will have to start some research.
we are all set for the GTG res, i heard back from them today
kmkrnn -- for retail therapy, have you read my 2 threads?
she is reading them closely
Thanks Shanghaiese. I have gone back and taken notes from several of your previous posts. We should be able to keep busy for days.
kmkrnn -- hope you have a watertown visit scheduled, shopping there is excellent therapy, no malls, just rows of small shops.
aline--which town do you suggest?
Bob: Click on my name and check My Notes on 2 months in Shanghai 2012, I gave Peter detailed info to go to Suzhou and Tongli. If there is 4-5 of you, ask the hotel for an SUV or mini-van so you can lay down across the last row of seats!
So where did we get the reservations?
Coke,
the reservation is at the Lost Heaven on the Bund @ 6:30 pm on October 29th under the name of Robert Kimball. See you there!
Aloha!
as usual peter is right!!
That is great! Thanks Robert! REally looking forward to it!
coke, look forward to meeting you and the family..
Hi Gang! Just confirming. Still on for the 29th at Lost Heaven. How many people are coming?
Cheers,
Coke
Coke: I think Robert had drinks with the terra cotta warriors in Xian and hasn't woke up yet!
We are still in. (2) June & mike
Hawaiiantravelers (2)
Bob, Karen and friend (3)
And your family, which I believe is 3
Total if 10 - am I missing anyone?
I am sooo jealous!
We loved our dinner last November at the Lost Heaven in the French Concession!
Weekender: I love it too! It is the original one and I had a GTG several years ago with Nutela and the Nagafans, it is quieter in an upscale residential area of large european-style mansions and fewer highrises. The one on the BUND is in the center of all action.
Very cool! See you all on the Bund in a few days!
10 total..
