I am planning a trip to Taiwan and Hong Kong and had originally planned five nights in Taipei and four nights in Hong Kong. Whilst reading about Taiwan, however, it seems that five nights is not enough to allow visits to Tainan in the south (even with the 2-hr. per way high speed train) and Taroko NP (which seems to be best with an overnight stay in the park), and still allow side trips to Taichung and the Alishan national Scenic Area.
Haven't been back to Hong Kong since before the turnover, but now am wondering, is it best to focus on Taiwan and forget about Hong Kong?
Any advice?

Outside of the cities for nature it is super nice...
Hong Kong prettiest best city/harbor by far for me
For me so as to avoid travel days to from one or the other
not both in the short time you have.
I would choose one, either Taiwan or Hong Kong/Macau. You have enough time to really enjoy one, not enough for both.
Hong Kong hasn't changed THAT much in the last 15 years. Just more highrises, more high-end shopping and more high-end dining. Unless that's what most interest you, I'd recommend spending all your time in Taiwan.
