We were planning our trip to Thailand and quite excited about reaching some authentic areas. Recently, though, we have some concern about traveling in the north remote areas of Thailand, which we were looking forward to seeing with a guide perhaps (Mae Hong Son) since we noticed travel advisories. Now, we are thinking about whether we should go to Taiwan instead. Any thoughts?
Thailand or Taiwan?

Travel advisories? I wouldn't hesitate to travel in northern Thailand. The US often lists travel advisories for the far south of Thailand along the Malaysian border, an area seldom visited by tourists because of occasion al sectarian bombings. Honestly, the areas you are thinking of visiting are probably safer than home.
Taiwan would be a totally different experience. Having been to both, I'd vote for Thailand.
the only problem areas i am aware of are in the south and far eastern areas
I would have no issues with traveling in northern Thailand. However, I found Taiwan a fascinating destination.
If this is your first trip to Asia, go ahead and visit Thailand, otherwise seriously consider Taiwan. See http://mytimetotravel.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/typhoon-on-taiwan/ and two following posts.
Think we are settling in on Thailand. Thanks for the advice.
