I want to go to Uzbekistan in the spring of 2011 and I'm just starting my planning. I would like to go to Urumqi and Kashkar on the trip as well. I'm looking for a tour operator. Any suggestions for starting out this planning?

I really can't help, but I plan on visiting Uzbekistan on my next big trip, I'll be following this thread.
I'm hoping to get there this year. stantours.com is one local outfit I've communicated with. Western operators you can check into are MIR, Bestway and Sundowners.
Just Uzbekistan, or the rest of the 'stans? BTW, Lonely Planet's Thorntree may be more productive than Fodors for this trip.
The cities of Tashket and Samarkand are beautiful. Incredible mosques and mosaics. Obviously, if you head there in the summer be aware of the heat. We had well over 100 degrees most days and it barely cooled down at night. We went many, many years ago.
Thank you all for the information. We are planning to go in April. I will follow up with the agencies you suggested and look at Thorntree.
We are just planning on Uzbekistan, Urumqi (China) and Kashkar (Kyrgyzstan)
Why Urumqi? If you're going to Xinjiang and want to skip Kashgar (I hear bad things about the destruction of the old city) it would be much more interesting to go south of the Taklamaklan. Haven't heard of Kashkar - what's there?
