I've visited China 3x in Nov and Dec. I've heard it's a bad idea to visit in Summer - HOT and CROWDS! I was thinking of Guangdung, Beijing Shanghai and maybe Xian. What do you think?

Laos Trip Report (Vientiane, Luang Prabang): February 2013

I've been to China multiple times in the summer. It can definitely be unbearable sometimes- the humidity and heat combined with the air quality can be unpleasant.
However, I did not think the crowds were particularly a problem. Most places do have A/C. It's still worthwhile to go in the summer.
If you are not used to heat and humidity, summer is not a good time to go, more than 1/2 the sights/sites are outdoors, you won't have A/C to escape to.
I hate heat and humidity, so when we went to China in the summer I put a great deal of emphasis in trying to avoid it.
We spent the first three nights visiting a friend in Beijing. (No problem). The last three nights of our trip were in Shanghai where the heat and humidity were significant, but we managed to find enough indoor and air-conditioning to keep us alive.
In between, we went on an 8 night privately guided trip to the northwest, flying to Lanzhou (southern Gansu Province), visiting the Binglingsi, Xiahe, Langmu, Sangke Grassleands, and in the northern Sichuan Province Jiuzhaigou, Songpan, and Huanglong. Nothing but clear skies and low temps. It was beautiful, exciting, amazing, and as comfortable as can be.
