Does anyone have good advice about visiting Horton Plains from Nuwara Eliya - specifically the most cost-efficient way to get out there and whether a guide is advisable? I understand it is quite expensive and I am a solo traveler.

Horton Plains is about one hours drive from Nuwara Eliya. The road is now in good condition and even a tuk tuk can make it but more advisable to hire a car/van from town. The road climbs up very steeply at Pattipola. The Wildlife Department Entry office at the gate will sell you an entry ticket and also provide you a guide. Depending on your level of fitness and what you want there are a variety of walks with differing levels of difficulty. Kirigalpottha is the most difficult takes about 4 hours, and the easiest is the walk to worlds end and Bakers Falls. There is a healthy population of leopard in Horton Plains but very rarely sighted. If you want a specialist birding guide you may need to check with the naturalist at St Andrews Hotel in Nuwara Eliya.
