Last year we stayed at Adelphi Suites and particularly appreciated the proximity to the BTS. But for our trip in 2014 we want to stay on the river. We would love to stay at the Peninsula or Mandarin Oriental, but I fear they will be way out of our price range unless some great specials appear. We'll likely stay for 6 nights in mid January 2014. First, where does one find any specials for hotels along the river? 2nd, recommendations for a hotel a step or two down from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel? Thanks!

One step down is the Ramada Plaza Menam Riverside. Two steps down is Ibis. Try agoda.com.
Other hotels to consider are the Shangri-La, The Sheraton Royal Orchid or the Hilton Millennium all in the same area as the Pen or Oriental. I would consider these all a step or so down from the Pen or Oriental. Farther away, there is the Anantara, or a bit closer in, the Chatrium. I would consider all of these a step or so up from the Ramada or the Ibis.
Agoda or sawasdee.com are good places to check. For the Sheraton Royal Orchid, I have always booked directly with the hotel using either the SPG50 rate (half off, using some points, or a points and money option. This is a great deal if you have any Starwood points.
we just returned from Bangkok and we stayed at the Shangri La on the river. The pros are that the hotel is beautiful and our room had a wonderful river view. The BTS station is a walk through the hotel to the other wing which is not to far but not just out the door. The cons are that most everything we did except for the Grand Palace, etc. were aways away and required either a Tuk Tuk, taxi or BTS. Not such a big deal but in traffic it is a trip. Also after having been out all day having to get on the BTS again or taxi was not fun. WE paid about $200.00 US a night, and should have gotten the room with breakfast because without breakfast is about $30.00 per person.
our favorite is the anantara riverside, but we like chatrium riverside too.. both have good restaurants and fab pools..
sh-la is nice but costly... i find the sheraton to be old, but it often offers good deals..
hilton is nice, but rooms are odd..
all the hotels mentioned are imo, far nicer than adelphi... staying on the river does not put you central, but it is nice to be away from the city activity..
Ditto on the Ramada.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I will keep a watch for any specials with these hotels. I saw on Agoda what seemed like a good rate on Chatrium. Six nights river view room with breakfast is about $1000 including tax.
I need to check my Starwood points but I don't think I have enough to help with a room at the Sheraton.
that chatrium rate is not fabulous..
sheraton is about 3000 pts
What would be a good rate?
$90-120
incl breakfast...
try e mailing them, i got the best price that way..
it also may be too early for good 2014 prices... apr-may is when they publish i think
Thanks for the advice.
The Hilton Millineum looks fabulous, but unfortunately is on the "wrong" side of the river unless you're looking for a place to relax and lounge. I have stayed at the Sheraton (granted many years ago) and will be staying there again in April. I consider it "middle of the road" -- not as luxurious as the Pen, Shangrila, or Oriental, but with river views from all the rooms. That view is a stunner. It's just fascinating to watch all the activity, much like the working harbor in Hong Kong.
there is no wrong side of the river..
Bob, I agree. There is no "wrong side" of the river. Those shuttle boat rides are really quite pleasant... something to look forward to, actually.
Warm greetings yestravel (fine handle) and do hope Bangkok riverside lodging becomes reality for you; very special part of the world. Some of my most joyous BKK business and holiday moments have occurred down by the Chao Phraya. (And my review of our soft opening stay at The Siam doesn't come remotely close to capturing the exquisite nature of that riverside retreat.) And, yestravel, should you ever desire lodging - and airline - reccos in our fine home of Singapore, honoured to assist.
Will highly suggest signing up for all of the properties' various loyalty programmes and email updates (if available). You never know what will transpire, even for your anticipated high season stay in January. Can assure you from recent (and current) Asia business travel stays, quite the competition going on for the corporate traveller. Good luck with your holiday bookings; sounds like a lovely time.
Savour your planning and early and warm weekend wishes to you and all,
macintosh (robert)
