bay of islands

We are planning for honeymoon in the month of january. We are going to visit entire new zealand. First we thought fiji islands but the climate is not good. Can you suggest if bay of islands is a good option and how far is it from kaikoura. We are from india and we are looking for cool pleasant climate. Is there any other island we should check?
