We will be traveling in Australia next December/January, starting in Melbourne and ending up in Sydney about two weeks later. Although we will spend a few days in each city, we'll mostly be in the countryside, so we are renting a car. Both Hertz and Budget have rather sizeable drop-off charges for one-way rentals. I was wondering if there might be an Australian company that would be more reasonable.

Try Avis and the relocation companies like One Way Car Remtals. The latter often has great deals, allowing several days for as little as $1/day, but the dates have to suit your plans.
I get a hire car to take me to Sydney Airport from 3 hours away. I have always found Avis to be way cheaper than Hertz.
Don't get your hire car at the airport. So many hidden charges for the whole trip. I'd get a cab in to the city and get my hire car there. I learnt from experience after getting a hire car at Melbourne Airport for a week when my father suddenly passed away.
