My daughter, age 23, is leaving in February to study for a semester at Griffith University, Gold Coast. She will be there until the end of June & we would like suggestions on sights/activities that are not to be missed while she is there. How far is the Great Barrier Reef from Gold Coast and the best mode of transportation to get there since she will not have a car? How is public transportation for getting around & to places? Please consider she is a student & will be on a budget

Fly. It's 1700kms to Cairns.
Google maps is her (and your) friend.
Lots to see & do - according to her interests.
Probably best contact the Uni re accommodation in the first instance. We have lots of o/a students & they will have good recommendations for her.
The local public transport system is not great but adequate.
Fly to Cairns for the GBR as there are many cheaper options there for accommodation and reef trips.
What is your daughter studying and what is she interested in? The Gold Coast and Brisbane offer all sorts of opportunities.
