I'm thinking of surprising my husband with a surfing trip, but since I don't surf, I'm not sure where or when to do this.
He likes moderate, not monster surf and likes to surf from the beach, as opposed to needed to take boats out.
I like to relax on the beach for only a while, so would like to go somewhere with interesting local culture, shopping or other diversions.
I'm thinking of Java, Samoa, Cook Islands.
Any ideas, including best month to go?

No beach surfing anywhere I know of in the Cooks (never even saw a surfboard). The islands are all encircled by surrounding reefs, so the breaks occur out there. I was told the surfing there is extremely dangerous.
Ken
Thanks Ken, Guess Cooks are off the list! I do remember your great trip report a while back though and had it in my brain as a possibility.
Any other sugesstions, anyone?
Both Samoa and Java have lots of popular surf breaks. Bear in mind that you can't surf on Sunday in Samoa; it's a day of rest, and they mean it. They also have sharks. Java has sea urchins, which are a bit easier to avoid. Best from April to November but surfable all year round. Some of the most famous spots are on an island you have to boat to, but there are loads off of the main beach too. Also consider Bali, where you will probably encounter more English-speakers.
