We are Australians who travelled on The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin last year. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the service on board was fantastic - we actually travelled Platinum Class but heard good reviews from other passengers who were in the other classes. We would certainly recommend it.
We also travelled on the Overlander from Brisbane to Longreach some years ago and enjoyed it also - but it was certainly streets behind in class and service.
If you plan a train trip, make sure you know the details of what time you pass through which place. I went on the Indian-Pacific from Adelaide to Sydney some time ago, and was really disappointed to be travelling through the beautiful Blue Mountains early in the morning when it was pitch black. It was probably mid-winter - can't remember now.
Through through the desert near Broken Hill in the daylight was very special - and we'll always remember the biggest group of kangaroos we've ever seen hopping along gracefully not far from the train.
