Just returned from spending 11 nights in Newfoundland and 7 in Nova Scotia. We spent 3 nights each in Gros Morne NP and St. John's while there and also in St. Mary's, Port Rexton and Grand Falls Windsor. In the NP, we stayed in Rocky Harbor as we thought it was a good central location of the park. We had accommodations at the Wildflower B&B. However, instead of the B&B rooms, we stayed in their guest cottage which was a lot more private but we still got to eat breakfast next store in the main house. You have your own refrigerator in the guest house that the rooms don't have if that matters to you. While there, we ate dinner at Earl's and Jackie's. Java Jacks was within walking distance but we never made it there. In St. John's, we elected to stay about a 7 min drive from the downtown area at the Leaside Manor B&B. Just wanted to not be in the hub of things for parking, etc. It was close enough to get back and forth. Suggest you look at the reviews of both places in possibly trip advisor or anything else before making final decision.

In addition to the Gros Morne area and St. John's, you might enjoy Trinity. It's a charming, romantic and historic town surrounded by spectacular scenery and it has some wonderful hiking trails, including one called Skerwink that's one of the top-rated scenic trails in Canada. You'll find a wide variety of accommodations in the Trinity area, everything from campgrounds to high-end inns. In the St. John's area, you might like to check out the community of Ferryland, a little over an hour south of the city, for delicious picnics served in a breathtaking seaside location.

Gros Morne area is great, and while many visitors choose to stay south of Bonne Bay in Woody Point, where there are a lot of cultural activities, for at least part of their stay.

St. John's is a beautiful and fun city, although you may choose to stay in a location like Bay Bulls (Bread and Cheese Country Inn) or one of the many B&Bs located away from the downtown core -- they're much quieter than the downtown hotels.

Since you'll be visiting in May, there's a strong possibility of seeing icebergs near Trinity or St. John's. Nice bonus!

With the time that you have, I'd choose not to attempt the South Coast. It can be time-consuming to get there, and you may wish to focus on areas that are more easily accessed by car.

Two things to remember: 1. It's always farther than it looks on the map since this is a big island and secondary roads (those other than the Trans-Canada Highway) can be slow going, and 2. Please plan to complete your travel by dusk. Moose are plentiful in many areas and can be a real hazard on the roads if you're not accustomed to them.
