My wife and I will be participating in a Road Scholar program, The Calgary Stampede. We would like to make this a road trip and will be beginning our trip from Chautauqua, NY on Saturday June 23, 2012, we have to be in Calgary by July 8, 2012 and would like to visit Edmonton before going on to Calgary. Any route suggestions would be appreciated.

What fun! Since you have a nice window to make that road trip, what sorts of things are you interested in?
The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller is wonderful. There are other stops as well if you are at all interested in paleontology. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump also comes to mind.
Those are not in a direct line from Chautauqua to Calgary though. You could go first to Edmonton, then to Jasper National Park, down the Icefields Parkway to Banff, then to Calgary. With appropriate side trips, of course, depending on your interests.
I will need to let others suggest the route, since I am only an occasional visitor.
Lots of choices.
Is this a big circle trip, going west in Canada and returning east in the USA?
If I was doing this (and I have done most of it several times)
Get to Winnipeg, then Saskatoon then Edmonton.
Here's where the problem starts.
Get out a map, andnotice how the Rocky Mountains are on an angle.
Edmonton to Jasper is long and boring, but iut gets you to Jasper.
Alternatively, and better, is Edmonton to Banff, getting off the main highway and going through the foothills.
From Banff, drive north to Jasper and turn around and drive south again. This is well worth what appears to be double time on the same road,
Return to Calgary and enjoy the Stampede, drive south toMontana, and head home through the badlands.
UNMLESS you can take a few more days and go from Calgary to Bancouver to Seattle and back east.
For me around the Stampede last to Banff Fairmont Lake Louise Chateau Jasper Edmonton and back classic.mapquest.com directions carrentals.com out of Calgary rented a convertible it was awesome.Got chased by a young bear at a rest stop along the icefields pkwy. Wished I had not rented a convertible for a few minutes. gorp.com great hiking info.
Pretty uncrowded most attend stampede have fun.
