HI
we will be arriving back into Vancouver on the 4th September after 12days in Alaska and plan to self drive from Vancouver to Whistler then to Japser, Lake Lousie,Banff Kamloops and back into Vancouver on the 15th September.
Could you advise the best routes to take and places that we must see. We are not put off by out of the way places and have plenty of time.
As for accommodation - we do not like to book ahead as we dont like to be tried down to a time schedule - will accommodation be a problem at this time and can you suggest best places to stay - definately not 5 star people - just somewhere clean and comfortable - self contained OK and not neccessary right in the middle of towns.
thanks
self drive - vancouver

Jasper ...You might like Takara Lodge, small log cabins with kitchen and fireplaces. Just outside town and very convenient and quiet. No trains go by only elk!!! for a real treat check out fairmont Hotels they somerimes have outstanding deals and if you are a member of their Presidents Club your chances are even better(free btw) Not much in Kamloops as I believe most of the hotels are chains *(Motel 6 types) Banff..lots of choice and prices. Hope, BC has some decent older motels. First part of your Sept. trip is long wekend so perhaps you will need resv. lovely trip you will have!!
Whistler is a waste of time if you're driving up to the Rockies unless you continue on highway 99 through to the Interior.

I don`t think Whistler would be a waste of time unless you go back to Vancouver in order to drive to the Rockies. The road from Whistler (Duffy Lake Rd) to Cache Creek enroute to Kamloops is beautiful. It is only 2 lanes & twisty but if you drive accordingly, not a problem. It will save you several hours vs back thru Vancouver - esp if you hit rush hour!
