We will arrive in Vancouver mid June from an Alaska cruise but want to spend several days in Victoria and Vancouver. Our flight home is out of Seattle. I have reserved a rental car in Victoria for the 3 days on the island with plans to return it there and then take a ferry to Seattle.
My question concerns the desirability of renting the car in Vancouver and returning it to
Vancouver. I don't like to back track and that is what we would be doing from Victoria to get to Vancouver to secure ground transportation to Seattle. Also, the cost of putting the rental car on the ferry to and from Victoria seems unnecessary. The downside to all this is the schlepping bags from the ship to the Vancouver hotel to the bus to the ferry to the Victoria hotel etc.
It seems like the bus/ferry from Vancouver to Victoria where we can rent the car makes the most financial sense. Then taking the ferry from Victoria to Seattle. Am I missing something?
Is there a better way to make that trip?

What you have planned is certainly the best way to cover all that you want to see. Renting a car in Victoria for what you want to do on the island makes total sense.
I think your "bag schlepping" in Vancouver will far outweigh the cost of paying for a car on the ferry. When you get on the bus in Vancouver to catch the ferry to the island, you can check them right to downtown Victoria.
The victoria Clipper from the Inner Harbour will then get you to downtown Seattle.
