H'town Jim: I noticed, reading another post, that you mentioned living in the 'Peg for quite a while (is that correct usage - remember hearing some up north folks refer to it that way once..). Anyway, we are planning to fly to W'peg next July in order to pick up the ViaRail train to Vancouver. Am wondering about any especially good places to eat/stay, and what we should try to make a point of seeing while we are there. Will likely be just for the better part of a day or two. Thanks!

Stay at the Delta on St Mary in the heart of Downtown Winnipeg.
Dine at Pasta La Vista for dinner and lunch. PLV is kitty corner to the Delta. The train station is a short walk/cab ride from here.
Another favourite (and cheap) lunch place is Deluca's at 950 Portage Avenue - home made soup, pizza and pasta.
There is an indoor walkway starting at the Bay on the west side, through Portage Place mall to Eaton Place, past the Library and on to Portage and Main. Pasta La Vista is in Eaton Place.
Other spots near downtown are the Forks, Legislature buildings, Osborne area and the Italian area on Corydon avenue. Try gelato at Nucci's and also visit Stoneware studios for their pottery.
Have a great train trip.
Great suggestions - thanks!
I noticed in the calendar of events that Winnipeg hosts two Highland Game type events...we are Celtic music (and bagpipe) fans. Any place you'd suggest that might offer Celtic music?
