We live in the southeastern USA and want to do a summer long driving trip (with our large dog) to Newfoundland next summer. Because the ferry crossing from Nova Scotia is very long (and would be uncomfortable for our dog), we want to cross from Blanc Sablon, Quebec across to St Barbe, Newfoundland..
We were thinking of stopping in Quebec City, then on to Sept Iles, to Havre St Pierre and then?
When I do a driving directions search, it either wants to route me back down and through Nova Scotia (to cross to Port aux Basques) or take me through Labrador (Goose Bay, Cartwright, to Blanc Sablon).
Is there a road along the Gulf of St Lawrence to drive from Havre St Pierre to Blanc Sablon?

Nope, west or east, there is no road that goes all the way along that coast to Blanc Sabon. Even if you take the route through Goose Bay, it is very, very sparsely settled. Suggest you get a map from Newfoundland tourism and ask your vet about sedation for your dog.
Not only is the ferry long, its pretty expensive for a car and 2 people.
To travel the Lower North shore (the region from Sept Iles to Blanc Sablon on the Newfoundland border) you would take a ferry from Rimouski. It's a two-day boat ride.
The alternative is through Labrador West.
And yestravel, both of these routes make the NS-NL ferry look short & cheap. Eliz has the most practical advice, unless you are doing this as an adventure tourism trip.
