My husband & I have 8-10 days in early March and want to go to one of the islands or Central America. We would love to stay on/near a beach with easy access to snorkeling/kayaking; we enjoy nature walks/hikes, we want ease of getting around without a car (taxis are fine) in a safe area in a beautiful setting with some interesting sights to see/nice local people to meet. We want to spend under $200/nite for the room, and we like a less crowded scene. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!
Any ideas for snorkel/kayak/nature vacation???

Look at Costa Rica, Belize or Roatan - you should have no difficulty finding the type of activities you desire and accommodations in your price range in those destinations which should also meet your definition of being 'less crowded".
Akumal in Mayan Riviera Mexico.
I stayed at Half Moon Bay in one of the condos I rented from www.locogringo.com I also booked transportation to and from airport in Cancun. There are a few restaurants within walking distance along the beach and you are 15 from Tulum or Playa del Carman by taxi, collectivo (super cheap and safe).
Next time I go I will stay in Akumal Bay which is a bit more central and the snorkling is awesome, lots of turtles.
