my husband and myself was thinking of going to the Dominican Republic in October of this year for a week. looking for an all inclusive resort. with great food great beaches and a casino. first time going there and I don't wanna pick the wrong place. it's our anniversary also. I'd like to do some shopping horseback riding and get out and look around. can't find too much information I'm going outside of the resorts. we want to hang out on the beach drink fancy drinks and also I wanted was really nice room. of course I want a lot and I don't want to spend a lot. any suggestions please let me know. the travel agent that I've talked to are either too old or really don't know too much

When I was there many years ago (12 I believe) there was little to do off resorts in the punta Cana area. We did take a charter trip to the capitol one day for a day trip. I would go on debbiesdominican.com there is a lot of info on there on different resorts. You should be able to get the best price on this island versus others also your timeframe is in the height of hurricane months so be careful about that as well, get insurance.
wrong link in diann's post. should be http://www.debbiesdominicantravel.com/
Thanks for the correction. I actually "googled" my incorrect link and it came right up--close enough apparantly. That is what I love about google--it always knows what I am "trying" to say---
There is not a lot to do on your own off the resorts in the DR.
I think Excellence Punta Cana would fit your needs. It's a wonderful adults only resort. Great service, wonderful pools, good food, nice beach, small casino, activities on site, etc.
There are some shops on one end of the beach at the resort.
It is about an hour ride from the airport though.
