Santiago de Cuba: Opinions About it & Getting There

I personally know that Havana is one of not just Cuba but the entire region’s most attractive and fun colonial destinations. However, what do you think about Santiago de Cuba? It is a bit difficult to get there, so I’d only want to make the effort if the city itself is among the more attractive tourist destinations in the region. What do you think? Also, can one easily fly from Dominican Republic or Jamaica to Santiago de Cuba or at least take a passenger boat from Jamaica to Santiago or is a flight from Havana to Santiago the only realistic option? How long is the Havana-Santiago bus ride?
