Traveling this December with some friends who do not like tour groups; we don't either.
If anyone has done the South America trip - from Chile around the cape and finishing in Buenos Aires, and has any ideas or suggestions as to how to make the most of our trip with either private tour guides, etc. would greatly appreciate it. We are fluent in Spanish, so that won't be a problem.

I would suggest going to the Ports of Call section of the message boards at www.cruisecritic.com There are often lots of postings about private guides. Good luck!
The name of some of the tour companies we used escapes me right now but the one that I do remember is http://www.gvtours.com/. That stands out in my mind because it was such an excellent tour. I will see if I can find more information on the other ports. We did the cruise in reverse from Rio to Antarctica and ending in Chile. Just wonderful.. My favourite city (town) was Ushuaia. We didn't take a guided tour there but we did enjoy taking the little train "end of the world train" that goes to Tierra de Fuego. It is the narrow guage rail that used to transport the prisoners. http://www.enjoy-patagonia.org/ushuaia-destinations-ushuaia-end-of-the-world-train.php
That website has more informaton on the area as well. Enjoy your cruise and I will post more tour companies that we used if I can find them. We had some tours set up privately but had 3 ports cancelled due to the weather. I hope you have calm seas!!
Best resoruce: buy a Fodor's travel guide and it's not a plug for them.
We are planning a cruise in Europe and getting all kind of advises from people. We wanted a second opinion and that's where the book come into play. We bought the "European Ports of Call" for about $15 and it is well worth it. The book is travelling with us.
