Celebrity Summit between Vancouver and Anchorage....we did south but north should be equally as awesome. We flew into Anchorage day before and then out of Canada.
I took the Summit from Vancouver to Seward a few years ago. We had a great time. Taking a cruise from Vancouver or Seattle you would have to look at the ports of call and time lost in cruise days.
My preferences only, I never do any one way trips without at least another week for interior Alaska touring. Take advantage of being all the way there.
I prefer Vancouver for the wonderful inside Vancouver Island sailing. I am more selective of round trip Seattle sailings, especially if they have Glacier Bay, then more worthwhile for me. Overall more open ocean out of Seattle.
One other thing we did was add a week before our cruise to do the Interior of Alaska.
One week before our cruise left from Whittier, we flew into Anchorage..rented a car...and did a loop from Anchorage to Denali to Fairbanks to GlenAllen to Anchorage.
The only part of the loop I did not care that much for was the eastern side from Fairbanks to GlenAllen. Beautiful but far to desolate for my tastes.
I did enjoy Palmer. Just east of Palmer (around milemarker 101) you can drive right up to a glacier and walk on it without a guide or equipment. Our special needs son thought this was awesome since anything more difficult would be out of the question for him.
It was $30.00 for the car load of us (4) at the time, 2005.
Holland America or Princess - both have been doing Alaska cruises and cruise tours for nearly 60 years. Definitely cruise between Vancouver and Seward or Whittier (depends on cruise line). If you go southbound, you will want a stateroom on the port side. If you are traveling northbound, you will want the starboard side. Make sure that your stateroom will be looking east for the best scenery. All of the Inside Passage is breathtaking - you can't really go wrong!
If at all possible, reserve a balcony stateroom.
