Me, my sister, and niece are planning a cruise not sure if we will leave from Miami(which we have done b4) or San Juan, hotels seem to be much more expensive in SJ so just looking for safe hotel close to port. Any help appreciated.

Well the prime location is the Sheraton Old San Juan which is next to one of the piers. In fact if your ship leaves from this pier you can just walk to it. There is another pier which is a short cab ride away. The Sheraton will be a bit costly but it is safe and the area has several good restaurants, etc.
I don't know what the price is, but staying right in Old San Juan would be great.
However, we opted to use price line and ended up at the Hotel Caribe Hilton. It is a big modern, resort-style hotel right on the beach with beautiful grounds and fabulous pools. If you do not care about visiting Old San Juan, and want a beach day, this would work. We got a gorgeous double room with a balcony for $90.00 a couple of years ago. That was a big savings. However, you are limited to restaurants at the hotel, which are pretty expensive, IMHO, and we did have to use a taxi to the port the next day.
