I am going on a Viking Cruise in the summer. We end in Nuremberg, and we want to extend our trip by rental car. Where is the closest car rental and what company should we use?

You can probably take a taxi to the train station and pick up your car there. I suggest you contact Andrew Bestor at Gemut.com. They specialize in travel in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and can tell you the best place to pick up your car. They come highly recommended on Fodor's. We have also used them and have had great service.
You can perhaps get a better deal by using AutoEurope the consolidator. For Nurnberg there are several locations including the one at the rail station. You can easily get a taxi from where the river cruise boats dock to whichever rental office you pick. Make sure of the city office opening hours (which will be shown on the AutoEurope site) before making your selection.
Thanks for your help. I will look into it.
