My husband and I will be cruising to Mexico on the NCL Star out of LA in February. We are looking to do the shore excursions on our own rather than book through the cruise line. We would like to see the cliff divers in Acapulco. Is there a particular hotel or spot where the viewing would be the best? How do we get there? Cab? Walk? We also want to take a boat to El Archo in Cabo. Any recommendations? Thank you for your input!

Go to www.cruisecritic.com and check out the "ports of call" section of the message boards. You will find lots of good info there. We did the Diamond Princess Mexican Riviera last Dec. and had a very nice time. You should hopefully get to see some whales during that time.
We were on HA a year ago Christmas and did the ship's excursions, but at every stop there were vans, cabs, etc. parked alongside the dock, or within walking distance. I guess maybe you take some chance the person doesn't speak clear English, but at least you don't have the haul on and off the bus situation. We did see the divers on our tour, it was good, not as special as I thought it would be.
We hired a taxi in Acapulco I think there may have been four or six of us... The cost for going down to see the divers was I think $5.00 and that included a beer or tonic. The driver then took us on a tour of Acapulco and to the old flea market and Las Brisas.. There is no need to go on a ships tour for that port.. We split the cost of the van...the starter outside the terminal will get you a cab or van... Even though you see the divers on tv or movies these men are incredible..and your able to walk way down the steps to where they come up and see their little chapel where they pray before diving.. As for Cabo we haven't been there for years, but I'm sure you can get a ride from the pier to the Arch. With a little bit of luck you might see the whales who breed down there.. we didn't..lol
We are going on the same boat March 6-14th - please post some feedback after your trip! Thanks!
I made reservations for the cliff divers dinner and show at la Perla, directly on-line at:
http://www.acapulco.com/en/restaurants/laperla/index.html
We hired a driver for the day and evening for about $100. If you would like his name, I would be happy to give it to you. He was very nice, and we had a wonderful and fun day!
Please note the shortened port times on HAL for anyone doing that cruise; dinner in port is no longer possible.
