Please help! 1st time traveling to Italy and want to make the best out of the short time we will be there. I would like to see the "MUST SEE" things. Various things I have questions about:
Flying from LAX to Venice(since the cruise departs from Venice) but willing to fly from any where else in Italy back to LAX.
If my cruise departs on Saturday what is the safest day to arrive?( departs @ 5pm so need to be @ dock by 2:00pm. Don’t want to miss the boat.
Before the cruise or after I would like to visit Florence and Rome, each for a day. What's the best way to get to there (train, car or air).
When is the best time to purchase my airline tickets to travel to Italy? 10 months, 6 months or 3 months out?
Please assist me!
Thx

My DH and I took a RCI cruise out of Venice a few years ago (Splendor). We arrived in Europe a little over a week prior to the cruise. Toured Switzerland and ended up in Venice two nights prior to the cruise. We stayed at Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo. Loved it! Two other couples taking the same cruise stayed there. The hotel even arranged for a private water taxi to take us to the pier. Two nights in Venice gave us a great overview of the city. I had pre-booked a tour at the Doges Palace and a classical concert. The hotel recommended restaurants for dinner that were wonderful. We still talk about what a great time we had in Venice.
We loved the Med so much, we are sailing out of Rome next October on a Med cruise. If you go to cruisecritic.com and click on Royal Caribbean "Roll Call", you might even "meet" others that are on your cruise. The sail away out of Venice is spectacular. Make sure you are up on one of the upper decks for sail away.
As for airfare, research and once you find a fare and routing you are comfortable with, book and pay for it. I am using frequent flyer miles for our trip to Europe next October. I already have my flight to/from Rome booked. Actually, we are flying to Istanbul, sending 8 days, then flying to Rome for two nights prior to the cruise.
Have a wonderful time!
