As for private shore excursions in Messina, I have booked Mario Astone. (My tour is full. I may have a couple cancelling. I will know this week.) I know he has a brother that also is a driver/guide. APTours gets great reviews on all the boards for tours in Naples (http://www.aptours.it/).
