Of the small towns/cities, we enjoyed Passau and Regensberg. We asked crew members on the boat for suggestions for places to eat and also walked away from the tourist centers to find places on our own.
In Vienna, we ate at Demel, the famous pastry shop that also has a restaurant.
The crew also gave us dining recommendations for our extended stay in Budapest and they were wonderful.
In Regensburg don't miss a stop for a cold bier and the best sausage ever, here's the website

I just couldn't resist passing this along.
Enjoy your trip.

We just did Passau to Budapest on Uniworld's River Beatrice, fabulous trip so I know you will have a great time. Hardly matters which village, just stop and have a beer wherever you are.
It may be market day and they are always great. We like the cemeteries, wineres, and there is always Fodor's destination guide to find out more that you might like.
